5 years ago Koen Timmers, a teacher from Belgium, started to teach refugees via Skype. He shipped his own laptop and an internet connection to the Kakuma Refugee Camp. This camp is based in Kenya and is home to 169.,000 refugees. They all fled from war and hunger in several African countries.

The Kakuma Project now involves 420 teachers from 75 countries who offer free classes in maths, science and English and our own 2 innovative Maggie schools and 4 educational programs :

Houses 150 students and will allow classrooms across 6 continents to interact with the refugee students. Teachers across the world will be able to teach Math, Science and English via video conferencing.

We train teachers in partnership with University of Nairobi.

Asynchronous learning | Video lessons & Coding

Houses 150 students: our laptops, television, webcam, speakers and fast internet connection allows teachers and young adults to access information on websites. As a backup our Rachel device makes content offline available.

This learning hub allows young adults to learn to code so they can develop websites, apps and games.

What’s better than learning about global issues directly from people living in those countries?

Although people are charmed by the fact we offer free knowledge, we’d like to stress that we do much more than simply offering free education via Skype. This project allows students from across the world to connect with refugees which gives them the right perspective of refugees’ lives.

Students from 6 continents are able to have a chat about culture, hobbies, habits and religion. This intercultural exchange allows teachers to bring empathy into their classrooms.
